Champions League 2026/27 — About the Tournament
The Champions League is European club football's biggest prize. The 2026/27 season features 36 clubs in a single league phase, each playing eight matches against different opponents. The top 8 advance directly to the Round of 16, 9th through 24th enter a knockout play-off round, and the bottom 12 are eliminated. The league phase kicks off on 8 September 2026, with the final at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on 5 June 2027.

Champions League History at a Glance
The competition began in 1955-56 as the European Champion Clubs' Cup, with Real Madrid winning the first five editions in a row. It was rebranded the UEFA Champions League in 1992-93, and adopted the current 36-club "Swiss model" league phase from 2024-25 — the biggest format change in the competition's history. Real Madrid remain the most successful club ever with 15 titles, while PSG enter 2026/27 as back-to-back champions after winning in 2025 and 2026.
